It's like a lion at the door;
And when the door begins to crack,
It's like a stick across your back;
And when your back begins to smart,
It's like a penknife in your heart;
And when your heart begins to bleed
You're dead, and dead, and dead, indeed.

He stood near the ancient gnarled apple tree that for years now had produced only sour, wizened apples, waiting for her. The hot thick air hummed with the chirping of crickets. Behind him, an occasional fat June bug bumped against the screen door, drawn by the night-light. Now and then a car passed by, seeming only to emphasize his sense of aloneness. Not much traffic on Elder Avenue since they built the thruway.
Three houses down, Nealey's old black lab set to barking excitedly at something - a raccoon scavenging in a garbage can, most likely, but it could just as well be shadows. The mutt had a game leg and was as deaf as his mother's turquoise plastic crucifix that hung on the wall above the TV. The old man oughta have him done away with, put the damn thing out of its misery. Maybe I'll do it for him one of these days, he thought, a grin playing at one corner of his cruel mouth. As he retrieved the pack of cigarettes from his jacket pocket, he heard Nealey's door open, heard the old man's low, gravelly voice call the dog inside.
He gazed up at the starry sky, grin fading as he envisioned Marie and that hotshot kid in the fruity white blazer slow dancing under these very stars. Bodies molded together, the kid's hands moving over her, groping... his breath hot in her ear...
With a muttered curse, he shook his head as if to banish the image, checked an impulse to crush the pack of cigarettes in his hand. Instead, he struck a match against the tree, but his hand was unsteady and it took a few tries before he managed to get it lit. Leaning his back against the tree he closed his eyes. The rough bark of the tree stabbed like jagged stone through his thin nylon jacket. He sucked smoke into his lungs, exhaled slowly, trying to calm himself.
He wasn't usually a heavy smoker, but four hours later, when he finally heard the car drive up, a small mound of butts had accumulated beside him on the ground. With slow deliberation, he mashed this latest one out too, and rose to his feet. Although stiff from sitting, at the same time a power born of rage surged through his veins like electricity.
Music drifted through the open, car window - a soppy Manilou ballad about a girl named Mandy. Above the music, her laugh floated to him, high and lilting as wind chimes. Mocking him. The flirtatious note in her laugh made his throat tighten, his hands curl into fists at his sides. But it was the maddeningly long silence that followed, while the music went on playing, that made him want to fly at them, yank them both out of the car and beat that scummy kid with her until he had to crawl home through his own blood. He wanted to do it. He saw himself doing it.
It took all his will to remain where h

I've reviewed at least one of Joan's books before, so I just read this one for pleasure. Of the books I've read, this one really stood out. The reader will find a great plot, settings, dialog, and characterization in this mystery/suspense novel that continues Joan's portrayal of strong, smart women overcoming tremendous odds to put their lives in order. Even without the evil villainy that lurks around her, Joan's protagonist has odds to overcome, but that evil seems to lurk at her every turn.I do have one little nit to pick: the book could use some final editing. I didn't find the errors too annoying and maybe my old eagle eye is too critical, but I would have fixed a few things, especially errors with quotation marks, which one can't fix with search and destroy missions on your word processor. I read past all that, though, and thoroughly enjoyed the read. Readers in this genre will too. And those who don't usually read in this genre should find this is as good a place as any to get hooked.

Chill Waters Hall Hovey Joan Hall Hovey 9781450212717 Books Reviews
I was really excited to get this book after greatly enjoying The Abduction of Mary Rose, however I was disappointed. I didn't connect with Rachael, the main character, and spent a lot of time fussing at her in my head for her ridiculous choices. It felt like the writing could have been tightened up a lot, many of the events seemed really predictable, and it took me a long time to make myself finish the book. It's a standard thriller and the plot line, final confrontation, and last two chapters are strong, but I just couldn't get into it. The huge number of typos throughout were really annoying, too.
Chill Waters defines the word "thriller" in the best sense of the word. After a heart-breaking split from her cheating husband, Rachael hopes to find some spiritual peace and come to terms with this change in her life by moving back to her deceased grandmother's home in Jenny's Cove where she spent a happy childhood. But she soon realizes it was not to be, as someone evil lurks out there intent on murdering her. She doesn't know who or why, but it terrifies her deep to her core.
She soon meets a nice man whom she develops feelings for, but even he cannot keep her safe from the sadistical killer with a plot for revenge. As we read along, the tension builds and builds until we are so involved in rooting for our heroine, we find ourselves holding our breaths as the plot unravels- and we can hardly take it a moment longer!
Great job in building up the suspense and keeping us guessing until the very end, Ms. Joan Hall Hovey! Highly recommended by this author/reader.

First let me state that if you do NOT like romance in your mysteries then this book might not be for you. I am not a fan of too much romance in my mysteries but Hovey did it in a way that didn't drive me crazy;)
So, if you like hard core mysteries you might not enjoy Hovey's books. I haven't decided (after 5 of her books) what genre they should be listed as - mystery or romance? I know that there are some romance lovers who wouldn't like the books either because of the "gruesome". On the other hand, the lack of action for the most part, would drive a true mystery lover crazy.
I like her books so I ignore the basic formula she seems to use in her stories. They are each different or unique in their own way though so it is easy to ignore. I just know that when I am looking for a good intense mystery I don't choose to read her books. Since I need a break between intense stories I am glad that she writes a pretty good book that holds my interest.
Rachel,the mother of two grown children, finds that her husband is having an affair. Hurt, depressed, and aware that this is not his first, she leaves him. With what hope for the future she can muster, she returns to St. Clair, the seaside village where she visited her grandmother during childhood summers. However St. Clair is no longer the refuge of those happier days. Seventeen years after a local teen is murdered, a killer is again loose in the town.
This is a well-woven tale with well-developed characters. The suspense keeps the reader turning pages as the bodies continue to mount. There are several stories within the story, all of which compliment each other successfully.
What is less than successful, however, is the editing and formatting. There are too many missed or wrong words that could have been corrected with a good proofreading. I have no idea what's involved in the formatting of a work for , but the author makes regular use of a dash, and each time that is replaced by a fraction. That prohibits the smooth reading experience most people expect.
I just finished reading Chill Waters by Joan Hall Hovey. This is the second Joan Hall Hovey novel I've read and it didn't disappoint. The story was good and kept my attention. I categorize this Suspense/Romance. Mostly, it was suspense (killer on the loose tormenting the main character), but there was enough romance in it (mutual attraction denied until the last 25% of the book) to throw the romance thing in there.
I thought the story was well thought out and I liked the little details given about the characters and situations. The story did not drag at all and the ending was a nice wrap-up. (I have a thing about endings being too rushed or leaving major items hanging.) I was anxious to resume reading the book when I had to put it down and I read the book in 3 sittings. That's a good sign for me as I will put a book down that doesn't keep my interest and not pick it back up for weeks or months.
It does have a few typos and some kind of box with a ? in it where there should be commas (editing by someone else in my version?), but I generally read through those. I recommend this book. In fact, I'll be recommending it to my Mom, who is LOVING her Keyboard that I gave her for Christmas!
