While having a late meal in an all-night diner one rainy evening, Jimmy Barlow looks out the window and sees a man being chased by two guys who look like they're intent on doing him some serious harm. Then Jimmy sees the man toss a briefcase into a dumpster before disappearing down an alley. Does Jimmy do the smart thing and report what he's seen to the police? Nope. He does the other thing and digs the case out of the dumpster, takes off for home, and learns later that the case contains six hundred thousand dollars in one hundred dollar bills. He's elated of course, but he's also smart enough to know he has to hide the money and pretend nothing has happened for as long as it takes for things to die down. To his dismay, Jimmy soon learns the man he saw outside the diner has been found murdered. Not only that, he was tortured. Then Jimmy's two best friends turn up dead while on holiday in Las Vegas. And they were tortured too. And now somebody is following him. Jimmy Barlow is ... a worried man.

I liked the premise of this book - it makes you wonder what you would do in this situation - and it was written well enough, but I did think that the ending was a bit of a stretch. It was pretty believable up to that point.Easy reading, nothing too heavy but not exceptional enough to give it more than three stars.

Compelling and attention having l grabbing. I particularly liked the ending. This would make a good movie. Two thumbs up.
Gripping story, characters with depth, a really great read from start to finish. One of the best books I've read in a long time.
Great read. Suspense and intrigue. Great story with surprise ending. Life sometimes turns out and you do live happily ever after.
Because the Shadow books and Deathbed Confession were marvelous, I thought this one would be too. Way too many bad guys to keep track off. I really didn't know who was who. Very convoluted. And the last sentence of the book? She thinks the check is for a million bucks. He says "That's not 6 zeros." So how many was it? Was the check for 100 bucks? a billion? ten?
Good all-around book. Fine characters and fluid narrative, would've given it a 5-star but the ending was not to my entire liking.
A real cliff hanger. How easily one can fall into temptation without a thought and the tangled webs we weave. My heart was in my throat right after the fellow took something from a dumpster on a dark and rainy night. I identified with him and his family, and so I took this a bit too seriously. Telling myself this is just a story. But what a story!
This was a strange and unusual book. When a reader can go from almost giving up on a book to rating it 5 stars, there must be something very special about it. I did a lot of head-shaking and wondering about how low some peoples' IQ's were, but even though this wasn't a humorous book, I must say I found myself smiling. I'll definitely recommend this one to my friends.
